Pitcher plants have pitcher-shaped leaves, which contain nectar around the rim. The nectar attracts insects that slip into the trap, where they die. As the dead insects break down, the nutrients are absorbed through the leaves.
Pitcher plants, like all carnivorous plants, grows best in nutrient poor soil, such as a sand and peat mix. They also need low pH. Do not fertilize these plants, doing so will kill them.
