Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum)
Hornwort is the best submerged/oxygenating plants to help keep algae growth to a minimum and is very winter hardy in the north. As Hornwort adds oxygen to the water it emits a hormone that helps eliminate algae. Baby fish love to hide in the dense foliage. A great oxygenating plant that does not need to be planted. Hornwort is a fast growing plant that competes with algae for nutrients, helping keep the water clean and clear. This plant is also known as coon tail, has sturdy, hair-like foliage that oxygenates and clarifies the water. Hornwort does require some water circulation to perform well. It will not do well in stagnant water. Use one bunch for every 3-6 square feet of surface area or one bunch per 20 gallons of water for fish protection and to keep help keep water crystal clear.
